LED display sales, exports see 15 percent growth

    China (mainland) - The China Optics and Optoelectronics Manufactures Association (COEMA) recently has reveaLED that the total sales turnover of mainland China's LED Displaysreached some $500 million last year. Industry players forecast that due to the broadening of product applications, the region's LED display industry faces tremendous opportunities in the next few years.

Since 2000, mainland China's LED display industry has experienced rapid growth, with companies boosting their capacity scales significantly. According to Lu Jiahe, secretary general of the LED division of COEMA, there are more than 150 LED display makers in the country, about 5 percent of which are considered large-scale manufactures.

Statistics from COEMA also reveal that last year 80 LED display makers reached sales turnovers of over $1.25 million, while 16 makers realized sales turnover of more than $6.25 million.

The region's exports of LED d isplays also grew hand-in-hand with sales, with export values reaching $68.9 million last year. This year, the rate estimates a 15 percent growth year-on-year. According to Shanhai Sansi Technology Co. Ltd's General Manager Cheng Deshi, building decoration, car lighting and displays, LCD backlights, traffic signal lamps and special purpose lighting are among the emerging applications for the segment.

Aside from the development of high power white LEDs, companies also emphasize R&D on LED illumination in the near future. Further, manufacturers plan to increase investments in die-casting housing molds and increase their precision processes to compete with their foreign rivals.

Mainland China's LED display makers are also preparing the establishment of the first system standard for LED Displays in the near future, an initiative LED by COEMA. The industry expects R&D levels and exports to receive an additional boost once the standards are set.  (from:Global Sources)
